In reality, designing a TITAN Micropile is a multi-stage engineering exercise governed by EN 1997 (Eurocode 7), National Technical Approval Z-34.14-209, and FHWA guidelines. Four verifications must always be performed, regardless of whether the pile supports a foundation, anchors a retaining wall, or stabilizes a slope. These verifications define good micropile design, so it helps to understand what they are and what they actually check.

The first check is the most direct: can the steel tendon itself carry the design load? The design value of the actions, Ed, must be less than the design value of the resistance of the hollow steel tendon, Rd. The partial safety factor used is γM = 1.15, which gives Rd = Rk / γM.
TITAN micropiles are available in a wide range of sizes, from TITAN 30/16 with a characteristic load-carrying capacity of 190 kN, up to TITAN 196/130 at 6,465 kN. The hollow steel tendon is made from fine-grained structural steel S 460 NH to EN 10210, a material chosen because it can carry higher loads for the same dimensions while remaining tough and ductile enough to withstand the percussive forces of installation.

[text] => Verification 2: Grout-to-Soil Friction
Micropiles transfer their loads to the load-bearing soil strata through skin friction along the grout body. End bearing is neglected, so the pile resistance is primarily a function of two factors: the surface area of the grout body and the characteristic skin friction of the soil in which it is embedded.
The bonded length is calculated from the grout body diameter and the skin friction value, reduced by the appropriate partial safety factor. Skin friction values can be taken from EA-Pfähle Tables 5.31 (granular soils) and 5.32 (cohesive soils), or determined directly through preliminary load tests, the more reliable route on critical projects.
The grout body diameter itself is larger than the drill bit diameter. According to DIN SPEC 18539, a minimum widening of 20 mm should be assumed. In practice, Ischebeck TITAN’s empirical values from excavated piles show widening of around 50 mm in sandy soils and 75 mm in gravelly soils.
The system succeeds for two main reasons. First, its high load capacity is proven in real assemblies, with leg loads of 128 kN achievable. Second, its modular design adapts to complex geometries without requiring a full redesign. Accessories such as connecting brackets, rocking head plates for angled beams up to 78°, and friction clamps for cantilever beams allow engineers to address challenging conditions.

The supporting effect of the surrounding soil generally prevents micropiles from buckling. However, both EN 1997-1 and FHWA require a buckling analysis for slender piles embedded in water or in soft cohesive soils with undrained shear strength below 10 kN/m².
For TITAN micropiles, the system’s modular nature offers a unique solution: a combination pile. Where buckling is a concern, the section can be upgraded, for example, transitioning from a TITAN 73/53 to a TITAN 103/78 through the soft layer, then returning to the smaller section. This avoids the cost and complexity of adding a steel casing while still meeting buckling requirements.
Verification 4: Pile Deflection
Standard bored pile deflection formulas do not apply well to micropiles because the skin friction values of self-drilled hollow bars far exceed those of bored piles. Therefore, the most reliable way to verify settlement behavior is through load testing on preliminary piles. As a guide, statistical analysis of 136 tensile tests shows that 90% of measured displacements at typical working loads fall between 3 mm and 13 mm, a range that reflects the relatively stiff response of well-installed TITAN micropiles.

The system is supported by an extensive set of typical calculations, design examples, and load tables published in the approval documentation. Good design practice is therefore to work through all four verifications systematically rather than rely on rules of thumb.
The simplicity of the installed pile masks the engineering rigor behind it. That rigor is what makes the system reliable across the full range of applications it covers: foundations, anchorages, slope stabilization, and uplift protection, in every soil type the Gulf can present. A micropile looks deceptively simple. A hollow steel tendon, a sacrificial drill bit, a centralizer, a coupling nut, and an end plate. Drill, grout, anchor. Done.
In reality, designing a TITAN Micropile is a multi-stage engineering exercise governed by EN 1997 (Eurocode 7), National Technical Approval Z-34.14-209, and FHWA guidelines. Four verifications must always be performed, regardless of whether the pile supports a foundation, anchors a retaining wall, or stabilizes a slope. These verifications define good micropile design, so it helps to understand what they are and what they actually check.
Verification 1: Inner Load-Carrying Capacity
The first check is the most direct: can the steel tendon itself carry the design load? The design value of the actions, Ed, must be less than the design value of the resistance of the hollow steel tendon, Rd. The partial safety factor used is γM = 1.15, which gives Rd = Rk / γM.
TITAN micropiles are available in a wide range of sizes, from TITAN 30/16 with a characteristic load-carrying capacity of 190 kN, up to TITAN 196/130 at 6,465 kN. The hollow steel tendon is made from fine-grained structural steel S 460 NH to EN 10210, a material chosen because it can carry higher loads for the same dimensions while remaining tough and ductile enough to withstand the percussive forces of installation.
Verification 2: Grout-to-Soil Friction
Micropiles transfer their loads to the load-bearing soil strata through skin friction along the grout body. End bearing is neglected, so the pile resistance is primarily a function of two factors: the surface area of the grout body and the characteristic skin friction of the soil in which it is embedded.
The bonded length is calculated from the grout body diameter and the skin friction value, reduced by the appropriate partial safety factor. Skin friction values can be taken from EA-Pfähle Tables 5.31 (granular soils) and 5.32 (cohesive soils), or determined directly through preliminary load tests, the more reliable route on critical projects.
The grout body diameter itself is larger than the drill bit diameter. According to DIN SPEC 18539, a minimum widening of 20 mm should be assumed. In practice, Ischebeck TITAN’s empirical values from excavated piles show widening of around 50 mm in sandy soils and 75 mm in gravelly soils.
The system succeeds for two main reasons. First, its high load capacity is proven in real assemblies, with leg loads of 128 kN achievable. Second, its modular design adapts to complex geometries without requiring a full redesign. Accessories such as connecting brackets, rocking head plates for angled beams up to 78°, and friction clamps for cantilever beams allow engineers to address challenging conditions.
